Bord Gais Energy Ladies National Football League (Rd 3)

Having played Clare in a challenge earlier in the season, the Galway Ladies Senior team  went to Doonbeg on Sunday, for round three of the Bord Gais Energy National League, knowing they had a tough challenge ahead of them.

Galway were first off the mark with a point from Mairead Coyne but Clare took control and had 1 goal and 3 points on the board before Gillian Joyce pointed for Galway. Deirdre Brennan and Marie Considine exchanged points from play and Tracy Leonard and Ailish Considine exchanged point from frees. Mairead, Tracy and Deirdre brought the tally to 7 points, just one point down, when Ailish Considine struck again with a goal for Clare. There was a further exchange of points from Deirdre Brennan and Tracy and in the next 10 minutes Clare scored another 2 goals and two points to bring their tally to 4-08, Galway ended the half with a Deirdre Brennan goal and pointed a free from Tracy to bring their half time score to 1 goal and 10 points.

It was a calm day and with the elements playing no part it looked like it was curtains for Galway. However, after getting their second wind and a pep talk from management, the Galway girls came out on the field transformed. They scored a goal and 5 points without reply to take a one point lead. The goal came from Mairead Coyne, Tracy Leonard scored two points from frees , Ger Conneally scored 2 from play and Claire Hehir scored one from play. Clare came back with a goal and two points to take a 3 point lead again. The Galway women had more left in the tank and when Mairead Coyne found the net for the second time they took off, 2 points from Aoibheann Daly and one each from Claire Hehir and Edel Concannon ensured that Galway came away victorious. They now have two wins out of three. Their next game is against Kerry at a Galway venue on the 4th March.
