Caltra U16 Division 2 Win.
On 26th February Caltra Cuans played the first round of the league, defeating Menlough/Skehana by 1 point. As the league started earlier than expected for all clubs we like others had just got together and were lacking numbers. We started that game with 11 players and finished with 13. It was a big and hard ask from 13 players but they never gave up and showed great character until the finish.
Our next game was at home to Michael Breathnachs on the 4th March as they were unable to field a team we were awarded the points. This gave us a chance to knuckle down a bit better.
On 11th March round 3 was away to Mountbellew. We had grown our panel considerably; we were now much more an improved team. Even though Mountbellew looked a more physical bigger team,we had them well under control shortly after half time and again won the game easily.
On 18th March we played Glanamaddy/Williamstown in Caltra. They were also having problems fielding a team. We had the upper hand in this game and we had a panel of 20 players. Another bonus for us was that we had started training with u14's . This created more life and added great interest for the girls. Teresa Loughnane trained the now large panel and made a huge difference to the performance of both u14's and u16's.
Round 5 we were away to Ballinasloe, yet again they were unable to field a team due to many injuries. We were awarded the points and likewise also with Milltown. At this stage of the league we were in a good position points-wise. but would have preferred the games without any doubt.
The remaining game we played St. Marys at home in Caltra. They were unable to field a full team so a 12 aside was the only offer available. It wasn't a very accurate account of our performance and we had the upper hand in this game. We won the game well. We were on top of the league and awaiting the final.
The league final was played on the 23rd April in Mountbellew, against St. Mary's Killererin. This was a much more evenly contested game as both teams had their full panel available. The game started at good pace with Caltra-Cuans opening the score and continued to stay on top until half time with a lead of 2 - 6. Again the second half started with a goal after 5 minutes but soon after that St. Mary's started to get a grip on things and found their way back in to the game and with a nip and tuck performance the gap was narrowing and there was only a few points in the difference. As 3 of our players were involved with county that weekend and also played a senior game with club were now starting to tire and our pace of play was greatly slowed down. Some harsh referee decisions certainly did not help things at all but nevertheless the desperate Caltra Cuan's girls battled on and showed great pride in their club and the great numbers of supporters that had come to see them win the county final by one point. Final Score 4-10 Caltra Cuans to 4-9 St. Mary's Killererin. Megan Kelly our captain accepted the trophy on behalf of the team to mark another great day in Caltra Ladies Football.
