ST. FARNAN'S LADIES
The Junior teams epic journey finally came to an end on Sunday last when they were beaten by Galway side Annaghdown in the Tesco Connacht Final in Elverys McHale Park in Castlebar.
Continuous heavy rain and strong winds made for impossible playing conditions throughout and both teams are to be complimented on their efforts.
We had the advantage of these conditions in the first half and got off to a good start opening up a three point lead, all three scores coming from Elaine Cawley. Emer McHugh and Sinead Kilgannon both kicked further points but the opposition hit 1-3, all in the second quarter to lead by the minimum at the break.
Despite having to face the elements in the second half our girls summoned up their huge reserves of character to prevent the opposition opening up an insurmountable lead and were still in the game with just minutes to go, despite only scoring once in that half, a point from the teams top scorer Elaine Cawley. All in all the winners probably held a slight advantage for most of the game but our girls and their management can hold their heads high after what was a supreme effort.
It has been a great year for the team between winning a first County Championship at adult level and reaching a Provincial final at the first attempt.
Thanks to the players for their commitment and to their management team of Sean Kilgannon, Austin Clarke and Johnny Sheridan and also to Anne Ruane, Mary Furey, Mary Kilgannon and Eileen Reynolds for all their work in the background. Thanks also to Gerry and staff at the Flying Horse for the usual hospitality after the game.
