St Faithleachs 5-8 St Dominic's 1-7
The often over used adage of goals wins games applied to this final, played at a windy Hyde Park.
St Dominic's had the elements in their favour in the first half. They were the best team in the first half for 28 of the 30 minutes. The two minutes of St Faithleach's dominance in this opening half resulted in goals in the 1st and 30th minutes by Rachel Costello. In the 28 intervening minutes there were well taken points by St Dominic's from Rachel Corcoran and Aoife Gavin. The St Dominic's goal came in the 13th minute from a penalty converted by Ann Marie Murray. St Dominic's missed a few chances during the course of the first half and very denied a goal when a well struck shot from Julie Healy was saved by Denise McCaffrey in the Faithleach's goal.
St Dominics lead by 3 points at half time on a score of 1-6 to 2-0.
The lead was wiped out within 2 minutes of the resumption with a goal by Marie Kelly.
Rachel Banahan added a point in the 37th minute. St Faithleach extended their lead with points from Rachel Costello, Catherine Brennan and Ellen Hegarty. St Faithleach's were making excellence use of the wind with long range points. St Dominics responded in the 47th minutes with an excellent individual effort by Julie Healy. Further points from Niamh Scally and Jillian Banahan extended the lead for the Ballyleague girls. The game was put beyond any doubt in the 52nd minute when Marie Kelly found herself inside the defence and converted to the net with an excellent dispatched shot. St Faithleach added a further point on the 58th minute when after an excellent save by the Dominics defence, the ball was recovered by Faithleachs. The final goal of the game came in the closing minutes when Sarah Scally found the net from a free kick.
St Faithleach's were best served in the day by Ellen Hegarty, Rachel Costello, Rachel Banahan. Amy Curley played very well at centreback. St Faithleach proved to have a strong bench with excellent performance from Marie Kelly and Sarah Scally when inroduced.
St Dominic's most prominent players throughout were Rachel Corcoran and Aoife Gavin. Ann Marie Murray was influential in the first half but an injury picked up just before the half time whistle clearly limited her capability to impact on the game after that.
