Sligo V Leitrim (3rd May 2014)
Ladies 2014 Championship (Round 1)
Leitrim defeated Sligo earlier in the League and with them as the first opponents in the Championship Sligo needed to set their mark early. The game was officiated by Mayo referee Gerry Carmody.
Sinead McTiernan put the first score on the board for Sligo after 30 seconds. Another quickly followed for Sligo and then Leitrim was awarded a free which Aine Tighe made sure to put over the bar and give them their first. Sligo dominated after that with the first goal coming after 7 minâs from mid-fielder Bernice Byrne. Sligoâs attack was very strong, powered by the middle of the field they had at least 3 goal chances that were not taken. Goalie Noelle Gormley made some vital saves which no doubt helped to deter Leitrim from trying to score goals. The no. 14 Aine Tighe did all the scoring in the first half for Leitrim with a total of 7 points 5 of which were from frees. Sligo finished the half with another goal from Roisin Collery making it a half time score of 2.5 to 0.7.
The second half was a different game while Sligo started off the strongest and again got the first score Leitrim were edging closer and tightened up on their defense. This prevented the drive forward Sligo had successfully worked on in the first half. The 14 minute was the last time Sligo would score in the game. Bernice had another goal chance hit of the cross bar mid way through the half which might have changed the game but Leitrim worked hard and after 20mins got the goal they deserved. Sligoâs manager Pat Costello hoped fresh legs in the defense might lift the game when he brought on Annmarie Coleman for Aisling OâGara. Sligo worked hard but let the concentration slip as the Leitrimâs defense cleaned up all ball past the 45mtr line. As in the first half experienced player Aine Tighe was top scorer leading her team to victory.
While Sligo won the first half and will be disappointed with the missed chances to give them the extra cushion going into the second half Leitrim battled hard and held their concentration longer.
The final score was Sligo 2.9 to Leitrim 1.14.
