Tesco Homegrown Ladies National Football League Division 3 Play-Off
Roscommon3-11
Leitrim 5-10
Sun-drenched Allen Park Newtownforbes home of Clonguish GAA was the venue for this Tesco Homegrown Ladies National Football League Division 3 Play-Off played between Roscommon and Leitrim to decide third and fourth place on the league table.
As the old cliché goes that goals win matches this was the case here as the Leitrim women hit five over the hour. Roscommon matched Leitrim in the early stages of this game but once Aine Tighe pounced for Leitrimâs second goal in the twentieth minute Roscommon were on the back foot for the remainder of the game.
Roscommon were first on the scoreboard with a point on the run from Laura Fleming in the fourth minute. Leitrim hit for the first goal as early as the sixth minute in a flowing move that ended with a well taken goal by Carla Legien. Roscommon response was immediate Sheila Bradys kick out found Catriona Regan her long delivery found Laura Fleming the St. Ciarans player rounded her marker to fire to the top corner of Michelle Guckians net to restore Roscommons lead. Leitrim hit two points in row in the ninth and tenth minutes to take the lead courtesy of Aileen McGuire and Deidre Ward. Jenny Downey pointed free in the twelfth minute levelled matters after a foul Laura Fleming. Niamh Tighe and Jenny Downey swapped points before Aine Tighe hit for Leitrimâs second goal to propel them into a lead they never relinquished for the remainder of the game. Leitrim hit a purple patch and went on to hit a further 1-02 their third goal coming from midfielder Anna Conlon points coming from Aine and Niamh Tighe to put them into a commanding lead by the twenty fifth minute. Rachel Ryan stopped the rot with a fine point from play in the twenty eight minute this was followed by a Jenny Downey pointed free for the Roscommon to leave it 1-05 to 3-05 with half time looming. It was Leitrim who had the final say of the half as Aine Tighe again breached the Roscommon rear guard and her booming goal bound shot was put over the bar by Roscommon netminder Sheila Brady to leave it Roscommon 1-05 Leitrim 3-06 at the interval to the delight of the strong Leitrim following. Roscommon supporters were hopeful of a Roscommon comeback in the second half but the fact that they had to play into the strong breese this seemed an insurmountable task.
From the throw in Roscommon set up an attack and ended with a Rachel Ryan point from play with just forty seconds on the clock. Leitrim responded with a point from Aine Tighe two minutes later. Roscommon rallied and reduced the deficit to three by the fortieth minute Laura McLoone hit for Roscommons second goal in the thirty fifth minute after being set up by the hardworking Siobhan Tully. A Jenny Downey pointed free in the thirty seventh minute left three between the sides, and a Roscommon comeback looked to be on the cards, but unfortunately this was as close as Roscommon could get. Leitrim hit for goal number four on the three quarter hour mark courtesy of Aileen McGuire to put six between the sides once more. Jenny Downey and Siobhan Tully reduced the deficit to four. A Deidre ward point in the in the forty fifth minute put five between the sides once more. Then disaster struck for Roscommon in the fiftieth minute as Aine Tighe made a menacing run through the Roscommon defence to set up second half substitute Melissa Hewitt for goal number five, this put Leitrim eight points clear and with any hope of a Roscommon comeback. Roscommon did try hard for the final ten minutes to try salvage something from the game and did finish the game the stronger and went on to score a further 1-02 Jenny Downey 1-01 Rachel Ryan one point Leitrimâs responded with two Aine Tighe points to leave the full time score Roscommon 3-11 Leitrim 5-10. This game was a non-event as the home side romped to victory here finishing on a score line of Roscommon 10-16 Sligo 0-03. Roscommon play the same opposition in the Connacht B final later this month. Sligo seem to be struggling with numbers at this level as they had only 16 players at their disposal on Saturday evening last, this could possibly change by the time the Connacht final comes around.
